Hip Joint Wear and Movement Analysis of Individual Subjects
Thursday 5th June 08
1 pm - Mechanical Engineering Board room
Professor John Orr, Queens University Belfast
Routine outcomes studies of hip replacement patients at Musgrave Park Hospital, Belfast now comprise data up to 10 years. During this period, researchers have investigated gait, UHMWPE wear and activity for sub-groups, with an emphasis on the effects of cross-shear and sliding distances. Subsequent studies have related cross-shear derived from gait analysis to polymer bearing surface orientation measured in components retrieved at revision surgery. A further, substantial database of gait and wear characteristics has been recorded for individual patients and opportunities are being pursued to complement this data through further research.

Biomedical Photoacoustic Imaging
Friday 23rd May 2008
1 pm - Mechanical Engineering Board room
Dr Ben Cox of Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering,
University College London
Biomedical photoacoustic imaging uses ultrasonic pulses, that are generated when nanosecond pulses of light are absorbed, to image soft tissue to sub-100 micron resolution. One of its successes to date is in imaging the microvasculature within optically-scattering tissue in small animals and human skin in vivo. The physical principles behind the technique, image reconstruction algorithms, experimental imaging apparatus, images themselves, and future prospects for the technology will be discussed.
