The design and control of a direct cardiac compression assist device
School Studentship
Supervisor: Dr Peter G Walker, Dr Martin C Levesley

Heart disease is the developed world’s largest killer.  Transplantation of the failing heart remains the most effective treatment currently employed, but demand far exceeds donor supply.  In a bid to address this imbalance, the use of mechanical circulatory support has been explored since the mid-1960’s.  Currently available circulatory devices employ a variety of blood contacting pumps, but this feature of their function remains a common crux for complications.  This inherent problem has focused much recent attention on non-blood contacting circulatory support devices that mechanically massage the heart.  My project involves advancing such a device to a fully implantable stage, a task that will be aided by utilising and improving up on current in-vitro simulation models and test-rigs. .
